Follow-Up: Mississippi Senate Race Still Uncalled as Colom Leads by 2,574 Votes

JACKSON, Miss. — Counting continues in Mississippi's U.S. Senate election. According to the latest Associated Press tally, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith by 2,574 votes, 467,930 to 465,356, or about 49.1 percent to 48.8 percent, with roughly 96.9 percent of the vote counted. Independent Ty Pinkins has 20,028 votes.

Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson said fewer than 2,900 mail ballots remain outstanding, and counties have processed 11,202 affidavit ballots, accepting about 78 percent of them. The deadline to cure mail and affidavit ballots is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, and counties must certify their results by November 13.

Mississippi has no automatic recount law; a recount can only be ordered by a court. The outcome will settle the Senate's final seat distribution, with Democrats already assured of at least 54 seats.

GSM previously reported that Colom's lead stood at under 2,000 votes in the days after Election Day. As mail and affidavit ballots have been counted, the margin has widened to 2,574 votes — still smaller than the number of ballots outstanding, so the race remains uncalled.
