Maine Governor Mills Pledges Smooth Transition, Gives Governor-Elect Pingree a Maine-Shaped Necklace

Maine Governor Janet Mills met Governor-elect Hannah Pingree in the Cabinet Room of the governor's office on November 6, pledging a smooth transition and support on the budget and other major decisions. Mills presented Pingree with a necklace bearing a pendant in the shape of Maine, telling her: "It's been a lucky talisman for me, and it will be for you too." The two then met reporters together in the governor's office.

Mills, 78, noted that the November 3 elections brought the number of Democratic governors to its highest in 20 years. Pingree won the governorship with nearly 55% of the vote against two other candidates and will be sworn in on January 6, 2027, becoming Maine's second woman governor after Mills. Both said the new administration faces a difficult budget season, along with pressure from federal cuts to food assistance and Medicaid. Democrats will hold majorities in both the Maine House and Senate for the first two years of Pingree's term.
