Forstag Wins Montana's Western House District, Giving Democrats a Montana U.S. House Seat for the First Time in 32 Years

The race for Montana's western U.S. House district has been decided. Montana Public Radio reported on November 4 that Democrat Sam Forstag won the seat, and his Republican opponent, conservative radio host Aaron Flint, called Forstag on the night of November 3 to concede. As of Wednesday afternoon, Forstag had 50 percent of the vote to Flint's 47 percent, a margin of about 7,000 votes with 95 percent of ballots counted; the Associated Press had not yet called the race at publication time.

Forstag's victory speech was interrupted by cheers from the crowd, and results from Gallatin County gave him the confidence to declare victory. The win means a Democrat will represent Montana in the U.S. House for the first time in 32 years, another breakthrough for Democrats in a deep-red state in this midterm cycle.

Montana voters also elected Republican Kurt Alme to the U.S. Senate and approved two state constitutional ballot measures. Democrats noted that although they will hold a majority in Congress, it will not be enough to override a presidential veto, so future legislation will still require bipartisan cooperation.
