Mississippi Senate Race Still Undecided as Colom Leads by Fewer Than 2,000 Votes

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi's U.S. Senate race remained undecided on November 6, with Democratic challenger Scott Colom leading incumbent Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by fewer than 2,000 votes. Local officials said finishing the count could take several more days.

Mississippi law allows mail ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to arrive within five business days after the polls close — through Tuesday, November 10 — and still be counted.

State Republican Party chairman Mike Hurst estimated about 20,000 ballots statewide remain uncounted, many of them in populous counties such as the Jackson metro area. The two campaigns have sparred over the custody and handling of affidavit ballots.

Mississippi law provides no runoff and no recount procedure for the U.S. Senate race. If Colom ultimately prevails, he would become the state's first Black U.S. senator since Reconstruction.
