Update: Norte Fire in Orange County Reaches 80% Containment; Size Holds at 570 Acres

ORANGE COUNTY, California — CAL FIRE's official incident page updated at 4:33 p.m. on Monday, October 19: the Norte Fire, burning in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano area, is now 80% contained, with its size unchanged at 570 acres; the page's last-updated stamp reads 4:34 p.m. GSM's morning report, based on the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), put containment at 75%, and CAL FIRE's previous page update, at 5:10 p.m. on October 18, stood at 60% — the official figure now stands uniformly at 80%.

According to the incident page, resources assigned now total 583 personnel, 67 engines, 13 hand crews, 11 helicopters, one dozer and one water tender, with numerous air tankers from across the state flying suppression missions as conditions allow. On evacuations, all orders for San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano were lifted effective 6 p.m. on October 17; only two closures remain in place: Via La Mirada stays closed north of Esperanza to allow crews to keep working, and the burn scar remains closed as an active fire hazard area until further notice.

The fire's containment sequence: after breaking out at 11:33 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente, it stood at 0%, rose to 5% on the morning of October 17 and 25% that evening, reached 50% on the morning of October 18 and 60% that evening, then 75% on the morning of October 19 and 80% that afternoon. According to earlier OCFA briefings, seven homes were damaged or destroyed and two firefighters were taken to hospital with heat-related injuries and later reported stable; the cause remains under investigation. All Capistrano Unified School District schools returned to a normal schedule on Monday, October 19.
