Update: Norte Fire in Orange County Reaches 75% Containment; Size Holds at 570 Acres

ORANGE COUNTY — The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) updated on the morning of Monday, October 19: the Norte Fire, burning in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano area, is now 75% contained, with its size unchanged at 570 acres. The agency said crews will continue extinguishing hot spots and strengthening containment lines, aiming for full containment on Monday. CAL FIRE's official incident page, as of this update, still carried its 5:10 p.m. October 18 figure of 60%; the OCFA is the agency having jurisdiction over the incident.

The fire's containment sequence: after breaking out on October 16, it stood at 0%, rose to 5% on the morning of October 17 and to 25% that evening, when evacuation orders for San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano were all lifted effective 6 p.m.; containment reached 50% on the morning of October 18 and 60% that evening, evacuation shelters closed that afternoon, and containment rose to 75% on the morning of October 19. Officials said the burn scar remains closed as an active fire hazard area, and Via La Mirada remains closed north of Esperanza to allow crews to keep working; crews are also carrying out suppression repair work to reduce erosion risk on the burned slopes when rain arrives. OCFA spokesman Steve Concialdi said firefighters would remain in the area for a number of days to prevent rekindling.

The Norte Fire began at 11:33 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente, under the jurisdiction of the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). According to the fire authority, seven homes were damaged or destroyed, and two firefighters were taken to hospital with heat-related injuries and were later reported stable; the cause remains under investigation. All Capistrano Unified School District schools returned to a normal schedule on Monday, October 19.
