Update: Henderson Fire at Camp Pendleton Reaches 100% Containment at 3,260 Acres

CAMP PENDLETON, San Diego County, California — The Henderson Fire inside Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton has reached 100% containment, with its size unchanged at 3,260 acres, according to an update posted on CAL FIRE's official incident page at 5:12 p.m. on Monday, October 19; the page's last-updated stamp reads 5:16 p.m. It is the first time containment has reached 100% since the fire began on October 15. The previous official update, at 5:55 a.m. that day, put containment at 95% and revised the size to 3,260 acres on more precise mapping; the acreage did not change in this update.

The incident page lists the Camp Pendleton Fire Department as the agency having jurisdiction, supported by a San Diego County Type 3 incident management team and cooperating agencies including the U.S. Marine Corps, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service's Cleveland National Forest and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), with 332 personnel, 24 engines and 10 hand crews assigned. The fire began at 2:35 p.m. on October 15 near Henderson Street and Brown Street on the base and grew quickly under easterly winds: it was mapped at 1,404 acres that evening, prompting the 41 Area evacuation order and the first I-5 closure; on October 16 it reached about 2,080 acres with containment still at zero and I-5 closed in both directions a second time, before containment rose to 20% and the freeway fully reopened that evening; on the morning of October 17, mapping revised the size up to 3,132 acres and containment reached 50% that day; containment rose to 65% on the morning of October 18 as the work shifted to mop-up; on October 19 it rose to 95% in the morning, with the size revised to 3,260 acres on precise mapping, and reached 100% that afternoon.
