Follow-Up: AP Has Called 254 House Seats for Democrats, 162 for Republicans, With 19 Still Uncalled

The count in the U.S. midterm elections for the House of Representatives is still moving, and the Democratic majority keeps growing. As of Friday afternoon, November 6, the Associated Press had called 254 House races for Democrats and 162 for Republicans, with 19 seats still uncalled. Compared with the 252 seats reported earlier on November 7, Democrats gained two called seats; Republicans rose from 155 on Thursday afternoon to 162. Democrats have flipped at least 42 seats.

Republicans finally got some good news on Friday. The races called that day included GOP wins for Rep. Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Mark Lamb of Arizona and Anthony Constantino in New York's 21st Congressional District. Constantino won the upstate New York seat being vacated by Rep. Elise Stefanik; he had already declared himself the winner at his Election Night watch party.

Of the remaining uncalled races, Democrats lead in about half and could expand their majority further. Incumbent Republicans in danger of losing include Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Brad Finstad of Minnesota, Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee and Virginia Foxx of North Carolina. A lawyer for Boebert's campaign said late Thursday that there were "unusual voting patterns" in her race and that he expects it to head to a recount. "Since election night, ballot returns have been trending in Congresswoman Boebert's direction, consistently lowering the margin under one percentage point," Scott Gessler, Colorado's former secretary of state, said in a statement. Boebert trails her Democratic opponent, Eileen Laubacher.

In the Senate, Democrats have secured a 54-44 majority, with two races still uncalled. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola leads incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan by 0.3 percentage points, or about 600 votes, with 74 percent of ballots counted; the state's ranked-choice tabulation is still under way. In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads incumbent Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by 0.3 percentage points, or about 2,500 votes, with 97 percent counted — widening his lead from about 1,824 votes in the early hours of November 6. Hyde-Smith posted on social media on November 6: "We are not backing down. This election is not over."
