Follow-up: DOJ Sends Target Letters on Election Day as Alaska Same-Name Senate Candidate Probe Escalates

On Election Day, November 3, the U.S. Department of Justice sent criminal target letters to more than a dozen people believed to have helped recruit a candidate with the same name as Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan, a sign the federal investigation is moving toward criminal charges. According to CNN's November 3 report, recipients included senior figures at the Elias Law Group, which represents the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the campaign of Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola; the firm's chair, Marc Elias, said in a statement that he would not be intimidated by what he called a sham investigation. The Justice Department has also issued more than 100 grand jury subpoenas and preservation letters and has begun interviewing witnesses.

At the center of the dispute are two men named Dan Sullivan on the ballot: incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan and retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan. The Alaska Supreme Court ruled in June that both may remain on the ballot. Because Alaska uses ranked-choice voting and overseas ballots may arrive up to 15 days after Election Day, the Senate result could take as long as two weeks to determine.
