Follow-Up: 66 of 69 Victims Identified in Spain Train Crash, Including Four U.S. Citizens
MADRID: The High Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha said on November 2 that 66 of the 69 people killed in the October 28 high-speed train collision near Urda, in Toledo province, have now been identified: 54 Spanish nationals and 12 foreign nationals, including four U.S. citizens.
Of the 66 victims identified, 53 were identified by fingerprints and 13 through DNA analysis. Fingerprint work was carried out by the Civil Guard's criminalistics service and DNA analysis by the National Institute of Toxicology, with more than 60 specialists at the forensic medicine institutes in Toledo and Ciudad Real working continuously since the day of the crash.
Family notification is proceeding in parallel: 60 cases (36 men and 24 women) have been formally notified, and 47 bodies have been released to relatives. The other foreign victims were one national each from Argentina, Canada, Czechia, France, Japan, Mexico, Portugal and Tunisia.
The three people not yet identified are believed to be foreign nationals. Three missing-person reports remain open, involving two Australians and a Japanese national, and judicial authorities are awaiting the arrival of their families in Spain to complete in-person identification.
Spanish media reported that 41 people remain in hospital, 16 of them in serious condition, and that the Spanish government is expected to approve financial aid for those affected by royal decree on November 3.
The crash occurred on the morning of October 28, when a Renfe high-speed train struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line, killing 69 people in Spain's deadliest rail accident since 2013. The cause remains under investigation, with no final conclusion announced.
