Pope Leo XIV on October 29 sent a telegram of condolences for the victims of Spain's high-speed train collision near Urda, in the province of Toledo, which has killed at least 69 people.

The telegram, signed on the Pope's behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and addressed to Archbishop Francisco Cerro of Toledo, said the Pope was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic railway accident. He offered prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and encouraged rescue workers to persevere in their relief efforts, imparting his Apostolic Blessing on all those affected.

Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, said on October 29 that the death toll had risen to 69 and remained provisional, with 53 people still hospitalized, 15 of them in critical condition. Spain's government has declared three days of national mourning. It is Spain's second major high-speed rail disaster this year.
