ALCS Moves to Cleveland for Game 3 With the Series Tied 1-1: Williams vs. Jax

CLEVELAND — The American League Championship Series shifts to Progressive Field on Thursday, October 15, with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians tied 1-1 heading into Game 3. With inclement weather expected in Cleveland later in the day, Major League Baseball moved first pitch up to 1:10 p.m. ET; the game airs on TBS, truTV and HBO Max.

The first two games were played in Tampa Bay. Cleveland took the opener 7-3, and the Rays answered with a 3-1 win in Game 2 behind six scoreless innings from Freddy Peralta, after a fourth-inning error by Guardians third baseman José Ramírez opened the door to three unearned runs, as GSM reported yesterday.

Game 3 offers a compelling pitching matchup. Cleveland turns to 27-year-old right-hander Gavin Williams, who went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA and 248 strikeouts in 184⅓ innings this season, and who has been a postseason standout: in Game 5 of the Division Series against the White Sox he struck out 12 over 5⅓ one-hit innings, tying the franchise's single-game postseason record. Catcher Austin Hedges called that outing "what legends are made of." Tampa Bay counters with right-hander Griffin Jax, making his first career postseason start after converting from the bullpen to a short-inning starting role this year; he posted a 3.05 ERA in five September starts.

Games 4 and 5 also take place in Cleveland — Game 4 is set for October 16 — and forecasts suggest rain could affect both. The Rays' 98-64 record was the American League's best; the Guardians finished 85-77. The winner of the series advances to the World Series.
