Follow-up: Poland Begins National Mourning for Krakow Shooting Victims as Prosecutors Confirm Three Bodies at Gunman's Home Were His Parents and Sister
Poland began two days of national mourning on Sunday, November 8, for the six people killed in Saturday's mass shooting in Krakow's Main Square, as police bolstered security across the country. President Karol Nawrocki had declared November 8 and 9 days of national mourning.
Background: At about 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, a Polish man drove into Krakow's Main Square and opened fire at random, killing six people, four women and two men, including a British citizen, and wounding 16 others, among them two police officers, the gunman himself and five foreign nationals from Austria, Germany, Portugal, Russia and Britain. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said the gunman appeared to have been influenced by far-right ideology.
Prosecutor's office spokesperson Daniel Prokopowicz said on Sunday that the three bodies found at the gunman's home in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, about 200 km north of Krakow, had been identified as his parents and sister, all with gunshot wounds. Police recovered seven firearms and a significant quantity of ammunition at the property; combined with weapons found elsewhere in Krakow, the total of 11 firearms aligns with the permits issued to the perpetrator and his father, Prokopowicz said, adding that it was highly likely the same person killed the three at home, though investigations were ongoing. The suspect remained in critical condition in hospital.
In Krakow, the old town's main market square and surrounding streets remained closed on Sunday, with police allowing only essential workers to pass. Many nearby cafes were closed, flags at city hall flew at half-mast and mourners placed candles in several locations. The traditional hourly trumpet call from St Mary's church on the square was suspended for 12 hours to commemorate the dead, the first time this has happened since 1939, state news agency PAP reported. In Warsaw, police said they were strengthening security in busy tourist areas, installing barriers on streets in the historic centre.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on social media that the two officers who apprehended the gunman after a close-range shootout, Jakub Kulik and Artur Moranski, were 'true heroes' who likely saved many lives. Police issued an urgent appeal for blood for one of the injured officers, who was fighting for his life in hospital.
