Follow-up: Three Bodies Found at Krakow Gunman's Home, Likely His Family, PM Says; Wounded Rise to 16
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Saturday evening that drone footage appeared to show dead bodies inside the home of the man who carried out the mass shooting in the Main Market Square in Krakow, in southern Poland, and that the bodies of two women and one man found at the suspect's home were likely members of his family. Police are searching the home, and the discovery marks a major new turn in the case.
Officials revised the casualty figures late on Saturday: the number of wounded rose from 15 to 16, with 13 of the injured taken to hospital with serious injuries and two people already released from treatment. Officials also corrected the gunman's age from 24 to 25. The death toll in the square itself was unchanged at six people killed, four women and two men.
According to The Times, citing a senior Polish police official, the six people killed in the square included three Polish women and one British citizen, with two victims not yet identified. Five of the wounded were foreign nationals, including a Portuguese woman.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz called the shooting an "act of terror" against the people of Krakow. Prime Minister Tusk said Poland had never seen such a drastic case of terrorism and that the Krakow attack should be called terrorism. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski had said earlier on Saturday that the gunman was fascinated by far-right ideologies and held very radical, ultra-nationalistic views. Whether the attack will formally be prosecuted as terrorism has not yet been confirmed.
Investigators are searching the suspect's home amid concern that it may contain a large number of weapons, and are checking his car over fears it could explode. Kierwinski said the guns used in the attack may have been taken from the family home, where several firearms are registered to the suspect's father, but stressed it was too early to confirm where the weapons came from. The suspect, who was shot by police, is undergoing a second operation in hospital. Krakow Mayor Lukasz Gibala declared official mourning in the city until Wednesday, November 11. The gunman's name has still not been released, and the incident is still developing.
