Follow-Up: Pope Leo XIV Visits Paysandu, Urges Latin America to Act With Justice, Honesty and Faithfulness

Pope Leo XIV arrived in Paysandú, a city in northwestern Uruguay, on Saturday, November 7, becoming the first pope to visit the city. Reuters reported that the 71-year-old pontiff travelled some 378 km (235 miles) from Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, to the riverside economic hub near the border with Argentina, where crowds waited to see him outside overnight in heavy rain that eased off shortly before his arrival.

Leo led an event on the Uruguay-Argentina border attended by tens of thousands, urging people in Latin America to act with "justice, honesty and faithfulness" towards one another and calling on South Americans to bridge the divides between their countries. The 12-day trip, running through November 17, covers Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.

The visit comes less than a month after Leo underwent lung cancer surgery, in which doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung. His surgeon said afterwards that there were "no clinical reasons why this visit should not take place," and Vatican officials said he has completed a two-week recovery period and requires no further treatment. The Vatican has described the trip as a "homecoming" for Leo, who served as a missionary and bishop in Peru for around two decades and became a Peruvian citizen. He is the first U.S.-born pope.

Leo was due to return to Montevideo on Saturday afternoon for several events, including a night-time prayer vigil expected to draw some 60,000 young people. On Sunday afternoon he heads to Argentina, where he will meet President Javier Milei and give a speech, before travelling on to Peru, where he will spend six days, including a visit to Cusco, more than 11,000 feet above sea level. The Vatican has said he is expected to address issues including environmental destruction, arms trafficking and regional political instability.

In his first address of the trip, given to Uruguay's government in Montevideo on Friday, November 6, the pope urged South American countries to tackle regional issues together and set an example for international cooperation.
