Sir Mark Elder Conducts Prokofiev's Seventh Symphony on April 10 and 11
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Stories in Symphony comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on April 10, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and April 11 at 2 p.m. British conductor Sir Mark Elder leads Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7, Dvořák's tone poem The Wild Dove and Janáček's rhapsody Taras Bulba — three works drawn from literary narratives.
Prokofiev's Seventh, written in 1952 for a children's radio orchestra, was the composer's last symphony and returns to a luminous, lyrical manner. Dvořák's The Wild Dove sets a narrative poem by Karel Jaromír Erben; Janáček's Taras Bulba draws on Gogol's novel of the Cossack hero. Elder, long at the helm of Manchester's Hallé, is among Britain's most esteemed conductors. After this program the orchestra departs on its first European tour, and Masterworks at home pauses until late May.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
