San Diego Symphony Closes Its Season With Beethoven's Ninth, June 4 to 6
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts Ode to Humanity, the closing program of the San Diego Symphony's 2026-27 season, on June 4, 2027, at 7:30 p.m., June 5 at 7:30 p.m. and June 6 at 2 p.m. Music and Artistic Director Rafael Payare conducts the orchestra and the San Diego Symphony Chorus in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, alongside the premiere of resident composer Jimmy López's Symphony No. 6, Monarch, across three performances.
The soloists are soprano Tasha Hokuao Koontz, mezzo-soprano Nikola Printz, tenor Viktor Antipenko and baritone Hansung Yoo, with Printz and Yoo making their debuts with the orchestra. Beethoven's Ninth, completed in 1824, sets Schiller's Ode to Joy in its finale and stands as the most symbolic work in Western music. López's Sixth, named for the monarch butterfly, is a joint commission of the San Diego Symphony and the Montreal Symphony; López is in his second year as the orchestra's composer-in-residence.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; Payare's contract runs through the 2028-29 season. The 2026-27 Masterworks series, twenty programs since October 2026, concludes with this concert.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
