Grieg's Piano Concerto on May 22 and 23: Vänskä Conducts, Bax Solos
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Northern Lights comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on May 22, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and May 23 at 2 p.m. Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä leads the orchestra; Italian pianist Alessio Bax makes his debut with the ensemble in Grieg's Piano Concerto, alongside Sibelius' tone poem Pohjola's Daughter and Nielsen's Symphony No. 5 — three Nordic composers in one evening.
Grieg wrote his Piano Concerto in 1868 at age 25; its opening, a timpani roll into a piano flourish, is among the most famous in music. Vänskä is a leading interpreter of Sibelius and Nielsen and has recorded the complete Sibelius symphonies. The program is the orchestra's first Masterworks weekend back from its first European tour.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
