Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony on Feb. 5 and 6, With Rota's Harp Concerto
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Elegy to Exaltation comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on Feb. 5, 2027, at 11 a.m. and Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Austrian conductor Andreas Ottensamer leads the orchestra; principal harpist Julie Smith Phillips solos in Nino Rota's Harp Concerto, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 closes the program, and the Rigaudon from Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin opens it. The Feb. 5 performance is the series' Friday matinee.
Premiered in 1937, Shostakovich's Fifth was the composer's answer under political pressure, and its triumphant finale is still debated. Rota, famous for film scores including The Godfather, wrote his concerto for an instrument seldom heard as soloist. Ottensamer is principal clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic and increasingly active as a conductor.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
