San Diego Symphony Rings in the Lunar New Year on Feb. 6 With Li Huanzhi's Spring Festival Overture
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts the family concert Lunar New Year: Music in Full Bloom on Feb. 6, 2027, at 11 a.m. Conductor Michelle Di Russo leads the San Diego Symphony, opening with Chinese composer Li Huanzhi's Spring Festival Overture to welcome the Year of the Ram. Feb. 6, 2027, is the first day of the Lunar New Year.
Written in 1955-56 as the first movement of Li's Spring Festival Suite and drawn from yangge folk tunes of northern Shaanxi, the Spring Festival Overture is among the most performed Chinese orchestral works abroad. The program also includes Debussy's Clair de lune, in Arthur Luck's orchestration, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, among other works. The one-hour concert is part of the orchestra's family series for ages 6 to 12, with craft activities an hour before the performance.
San Diego County is home to a sizable Chinese community, and the city's own orchestra opening the first day of the new year with the Spring Festival Overture marks a stop on the season's public Lunar New Year celebrations. The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
