Hillary Clinton Says Putin Holds Leverage Over Trump: Photos, Videos, 'Whatever It Might Be'
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on a podcast released October 21 that she continues to believe Russian President Vladimir Putin holds leverage over President Donald Trump — possibly photos, videos or other material — and called Trump "a willing Putin puppet," saying Trump appears to want to divide the world with Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The remarks came on "High Stakes with HRC: The Accountability Episode" of the podcast On with Kara Swisher, co-hosted by journalist Kara Swisher and Clinton and released on October 21. "I continue to believe that Putin has things on Trump. I continue to believe that he is holding photos, videos, whatever it might be," Clinton said. She presented no evidence for the assertion during the program; it is a position she has restated for years.
On Trump's relationship with Putin, she said Trump "is a willing Putin puppet to help Putin" and that "Putin's not going to stop with Ukraine." She added: "I guess Trump has this idea that he wants to divide the world. He gets the Western Hemisphere, Putin gets Russia and Europe, and Xi Jinping gets the rest of the world."
The comments came ten years after the October 19, 2016 presidential debate, in which Clinton said Putin would "rather have a puppet as president of the United States" and Trump shot back: "No puppet. You're the puppet." On October 19 this year, Clinton reposted the debate clip on social media, writing: "We'll see if Putin's puppet continues to dance on his strings."
The remarks also follow a U.S. deal to import Russian diesel: after a call with Putin, Trump announced the diesel imports, and the Treasury Department has extended the related sanctions waiver through April 2027. A bipartisan group of senators, including Republicans Susan Collins, Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, has called on the administration to reverse the deal. On October 22, Trump signed an executive order implementing the Russia sanctions law while waiving most of its provisions on national-interest grounds (see related stories below).
As of publication, neither Trump nor the White House had publicly responded to Clinton's podcast remarks. Trump earlier defended the diesel deal in an October 12 social media post, saying he "made the right choice for the American people" in order to ease fuel prices.
"High Stakes with HRC" is a limited podcast series co-hosted by Clinton and Swisher. The episode focused on corruption and accountability, including what Congress should investigate first if Democrats win the November midterm elections, and Clinton's recollections of serving as a young lawyer on the Nixon impeachment inquiry.
