Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim told Reuters that the fatalities include 12 girl students and the female teacher, that three children remained in critical condition with head injuries, and that most of the injured taken to the hospital had been treated and discharged. Arif Khattak, regional director of the Rescue Department, said the collapse occurred at 8:48 a.m. local time and the rescue operation lasted four to five hours. A hospital admission list circulated in local media recorded 33 deaths among 53 patients, slightly below the latest official total reported by Reuters; GSM follows the latest official tally reported by Reuters and will update as officials revise the figures.
The school was the privately run Al-Khair Education Center in Peshawar's Dir Colony. Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed said 110 students were in three classrooms when an upper-floor roof caved in onto the classrooms below, that the building's structure was weak and its roof overloaded with construction, and that the school's owner had been arrested and an investigation launched. Deputy Commissioner Afaq Wazir confirmed the rescue operation had concluded and the debris had been cleared. Reuters reported that most of the victims were under 13 and from low-income households, and that the narrow alley where the school stands hampered rescue access.
