50 Houston Business and Community Leaders Sign Joint Statement Urging Repeal of Texas SB 17 Land Law
Southern News published a joint statement on November 6: fifty Texas business leaders and community representatives will hold a signing ceremony at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 at the Houston International Trade Center (11110 Bellaire Boulevard), supporting repeal of Texas Senate Bill 17 (SB 17) through the democratic legislative process. SB 17 imposes restrictions on certain land and real-estate purchases and has drawn deep concern from Asian-American communities, immigrant families and the business sector. The statement says national security matters, but legislation must respect constitutionally protected rights and balance fairness, reasonableness and due process; the signatories support revisiting SB 17 in the 2027 Texas legislative session and pushing for its repeal. The ceremony, hosted by the International Trade Center, includes a reading of the statement, the formal signing and a group photo. The statement stresses that the American dream should not lose its meaning because of a person's birthplace or ancestry, and that immigrant entrepreneurs create jobs, invest in local economies and support education, health care and community causes — a force in American economic development that cannot be ignored. It says the issue is not about any single ethnic group but concerns the spirit of the U.S. Constitution, lawful property rights and fair rule of law.
