Follow-Up: Trump Tells '60 Minutes' He Will Make 'a Few Changes' to His Team, Backs War Secretary Hegseth
President Donald Trump said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," taped on Friday morning, November 6, that he still intends to make a few more personnel changes to his team after Republicans lost their majorities in both the House and the Senate in the midterm elections. CBS released a preview clip of the interview on November 7; the full program is scheduled to air on CBS on Sunday, November 8, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
In the interview, conducted by "60 Minutes" correspondent Ross Douthat, Trump was asked whether he planned to remove anyone from his team. "I do, yeah. Little bit," he said. "I love my Cabinet. I think they're good, but I'll be doing maybe a few changes." Asked who he meant, he declined to name anyone.
Just hours after the taping, Trump announced the first of those changes on Truth Social: White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is leaving, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller will take over as chief of staff starting Monday, November 9, and Wiles will move to Trump's political operation. CBS reported that Wiles had handed in her resignation on Thursday evening; on Friday afternoon she wrote on X that serving President Trump in the White House had been "the honor of a lifetime."
Douthat also asked about Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who may face an impeachment vote when the House reconvenes next week. Trump said he has confidence in Hegseth and no plans to remove him. On the operation in Venezuela, Trump said: "We've won two wars. We've won Venezuela and taken out billions and billions and billions of dollars already." But asked whether Hegseth deserved the credit, he said only that Hegseth was "a part of it."
Later on Friday, however, after arriving in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump was asked by reporters whether Americans should expect more departures in the coming months. "Very little," he replied, according to the Associated Press — a remark that sits in contrast with the interview and suggests he does not want the public to expect an endless procession of Cabinet departures.
The shakeup continues a year of turnover in the second Trump administration, which has already seen the departures of Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Whether anyone follows Wiles out the door will become clearer when the full interview airs on Sunday night and in any further White House announcements.
