Trump Names Stephen Miller White House Chief of Staff, Replacing Susie Wiles
President Donald Trump announced in Washington on Friday, November 6, that Stephen Miller, currently a White House deputy chief of staff, will become White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles, effective Monday, November 9. Wiles will move over to Trump's political operation. It is the first major personnel shake-up at the White House since Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections three days earlier. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job!" The announcement did not specify Wiles's new responsibilities in the political operation or explain the reason for the change.
Wiles then confirmed in a post on X that Friday was her last day as White House chief of staff. "Serving President Trump in the White House has been the honor of a lifetime," she wrote. "I'm so proud to have been a part of what we've accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First. More than anything, I'm grateful for the extraordinary people I've had the privilege of working alongside. While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will."
Miller, 41, has served since January 2025 as White House deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor, and has overseen much of Trump's immigration agenda during his second term. A longtime Trump adviser who served as a senior policy adviser in Trump's first term, Miller will now take command of the day-to-day operations of the West Wing.
Wiles, 69, is the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff and has held the post since January 20, 2025, the start of Trump's second term. She was a co-campaign manager of Trump's 2024 campaign and a key figure in his return to the White House, and she lasted longer in the job than any of Trump's first-term chiefs of staff. Wiles recently announced that she had completed treatment for breast cancer.
The change follows the Republicans' sweeping midterm defeat, in which Democrats won dozens of House seats and regained control of both the House and the Senate on Tuesday. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon said publicly on Friday that Wiles should be "removed immediately" over the party's loss.
