Tropical Storm Pena Forms as Central Pacific's First November Storm Since 1982, No Threat to Hawaii Yet
Tropical Storm Pena formed in the central Pacific on Nov. 7, the first tropical storm to form in the central Pacific in November since 1982. According to the National Hurricane Center, Pena is located more than 550 miles south-southeast of Hawaii with sustained winds of 50 mph, and could strengthen into the basin's 14th hurricane of the year next week. Forecasters expect Pena to continue moving west, away from Hawaii, and to pose no direct threat to the islands for now.
The year 1982 was also a super El Niño year. Andy Hazelton, an associate researcher at the University of Miami, noted that NOAA expects super El Niño conditions to develop in late fall or winter this year, part of the backdrop to an unusually active tropical season. Hawaii's hurricane season has already been extraordinary: on Sept. 8 Hurricane Lowell caused damage in places including Poipu on Kauai, and recovery has continued statewide; the state parks division also updated storm-related park closures and reopenings on Nov. 7.
Forecasters caution that although Pena is not expected to make landfall in Hawaii, its outer bands and swell may affect southern waters, and residents and visitors heading to the beach should follow official marine forecasts. The state emergency agency says it will keep monitoring Pena's track and will issue warnings promptly if the storm turns north.
