Wild River Fire Grows to 856 Acres at 20% Containment; Cause Still Under Investigation
The Wild River fire in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest has burned about 856 acres with containment up to 20%, and its cause remains under investigation, with the Forest Service yet to announce how it started. The fire has been burning since Nov. 1 in steep, rugged terrain about seven miles southeast of Gorham.
The federal wildfire information system InciWeb updated the incident at 10:38 a.m. on Nov. 7, projecting full containment by Nov. 12. Rain and wet weather are aiding suppression, and firefighters are mopping up along contained lines, extinguishing deep smoldering and underground hotspots. No homes, businesses or infrastructure have been damaged, no injuries have been reported and no evacuation orders are in place. The Forest Service has issued a public safety closure for Wild River Road and nearby trails through Jan. 1, 2027, and the FAA has imposed a temporary flight restriction over the fire. The fire is about a mile west of the New Hampshire-Maine border, and the northwestern segment of the Appalachian Trail remains open.
