One Year After Federal Law Took Effect, 62,700 Connecticut Residents Have Lost Food Stamps

HARTFORD, Hartford County, Connecticut - A retrospective published on November 6, 2026 shows that since the federal 'One Big Beautiful Bill' was signed into law on July 4, 2025, some 62,700 Connecticut residents have lost eligibility for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. Research released in August 2026 by Connecticut Voices for Children found that about half of those who lost benefits are concentrated in seven cities: Hartford, Waterbury, New Haven, Bridgeport, New Britain, Meriden and East Hartford. A September analysis by DataHaven showed statewide SNAP enrollment had fallen from about 363,000 in June 2025 to 308,000 in June 2026. A year earlier, the federal government shutdown had threatened November 2025 food stamp payments; Gov. Ned Lamont announced $3 million in emergency funding on October 27 of that year and announced on November 7 that the state would cover full benefits for the month, defusing the immediate crisis. A year on, however, enrollment has fallen rather than recovered, and pressure on food banks across the state keeps growing.
