Alabama County Commission Race Decided by 593 Votes: Stephens Wins Re-election as Blue Seeks Recount
The race for District 3 of the Jefferson County Commission in Alabama was decided on Nov. 5, with incumbent Jimmie Stephens narrowly defeating challenger Camara Blue to win re-election. Stephens received 27,745 votes (50.50%) to Blue's 27,152 (49.42%), a margin of just 593 votes, with 42 write-in ballots among 54,939 total votes cast. It was one of the closest local contests in the county on the Nov. 3 election night, and the outcome was not clear until counting was nearly complete.
Blue has challenged the result and demanded a recount, but under Alabama law an automatic recount is triggered only when the margin is 0.5 percentage points or less; the roughly 1.08-point gap does not meet that threshold, and whether a manual recount will take place remains to be decided. Stephens has been declared the winner and is scheduled to be sworn in on Nov. 11 for a new term.
Jefferson County is Alabama's most populous county, with its county seat in Birmingham; the commission election was held the same day as statewide races for governor and U.S. senator. The results are unofficial until certified by county election officials.
