New Hampshire's Wild River Fire Remapped at 856 Acres; Officials Say It Was Likely Human-Caused
The Wild River Fire in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest saw new developments on Nov. 5: the Forest Service remapped the burned area at 856 acres, down from an earlier estimate of nearly 1,000 acres, while containment remained at just 11%. Officials said the fire was most likely human-caused, though the cause remains under investigation.
The fire was first detected at about 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, in steep terrain about five miles southwest of Shelburne, north of the Wild River and east of the Wild River Wilderness, where dry leaf litter and ongoing drought let it spread quickly. The Forest Service said no people or structures were threatened and no evacuations had been ordered. The Appalachian Trail remains open in the area, but the Kenduskeag Trail has been closed.
A closure order effective Nov. 5 shut Wild River Road (Forest Road 12) and the area north of it, the full length of the Shelburne Trail and parts of the Highwater Trail. At least 89 Forest Service personnel, three helicopters and one drone were assigned to the fire, with full containment not expected until Nov. 12. The Forest Service scheduled a public meeting for 6 p.m. on Nov. 5 at Shelburne Town Hall to update residents.
