Alabama Awards $12.09 Million in State Grants for Airport Improvements Statewide
The Alabama Department of Transportation announced on Nov. 5 that it will award $12,095,963 in state grants to public-use airports across the state through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program. The funded projects represent $73,071,980 in total investment, including $53,535,243 in federal funds and $7,337,174 contributed by the airports themselves.
The state grants, combined with federal and local money, will support runway and taxiway repairs, apron reconstruction, pavement preservation, airfield lighting and drainage, hangar construction, land acquisition and equipment purchases. Frank Farmer, chief of the department's Aeronautics Bureau, said the funding will help airport sponsors address infrastructure needs, and that the program also provides funding support and technical assistance for the planning, construction and maintenance of public-use airports.
Among the recipients, Anniston Regional Airport received a state grant of $29,633 toward the $1,185,366 second phase of drainage repairs on the airport's west side. The department said its Aeronautics Bureau will keep working with airport sponsors as the projects move forward. The program serves public-use airports statewide, using state, federal and local funding to keep airport facilities in good condition and air operations safe.
