I Love A Clean San Diego

San Diego County's First Pumpkin Smash Diverts Nearly 2,000 Pounds of Pumpkins to Farm Animals
San Diego County reported on November 3 that Halloween pumpkins can keep giving long after October 31. Nearly 2,000 pounds of pumpkins donated through the County's first Pumpkin Smash event, held November 1 in Lakeside, San Diego County, California, were delivered to a local farm and animal sanctuary, where goats and pigs enjoyed them as feed.
The event was hosted by the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation together with the nonprofit I Love A Clean San Diego on the afternoon of November 1 at the Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St, Lakeside, and was free to attend. Residents brought their leftover jack-o'-lanterns and pumpkins to be smashed on site; the smashed pumpkins were then composted or given to farm animals. The event also featured seed planting, games, a costume donation drive and a free compost giveaway.
Instead of ending up in a landfill after the holiday, the collected pumpkins were put to work as compost and animal feed, the County said.
