WASHINGTON — The AP Voter Poll released early findings on Tuesday, Election Day for the 2026 midterms: the cost of living and government corruption top voters' concerns, and voters are broadly unhappy with the direction of the country. The findings cited here are Election Day survey sentiments, not results — no seat outcomes are reported in this draft, and vote counting and race calls continue into the evening.
Roughly three-quarters of voters said they feel "angry" or "dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the country. About 6 in 10 said higher-than-usual prices are "more because of Trump's policies" rather than "more because of factors outside Trump's control." About 6 in 10 disapprove of how Trump is handling the presidency, and about 70% want Congress to provide more checks and balances on the presidency. About 4 in 10 named the economy as the most important issue facing the country and about 3 in 10 named democracy, both well above crime, health care and immigration. About 7 in 10 said Congress is doing "not enough" to check the presidency, about 2 in 10 said "about the right amount" and about 1 in 10 said "too much"; about three-quarters disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job.
The Associated Press's analysis also noted that more than 59 million people had voted before Election Day. Trump said on Tuesday that "everything's going good" as the midterms came to a close. Polling-place operations on Election Day were broadly smooth, with isolated weather and equipment problems; the Florida flooding-related polling-place changes are not repeated here, as they were covered in the 09:05 batch.
