Kansas Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Hamilton, the First Democrat Elected to the Senate From Kansas in 94 Years
The Associated Press called Kansas's U.S. Senate race on the evening of November 3 for Democrat Adam Hamilton, who defeated Republican incumbent Senator Roger Marshall, the candidate backed by President Donald Trump. Kansas is in the central United States, and its capital is Topeka. According to Reuters, Hamilton is the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Kansas since 1932, a span of 94 years.
The AP results page showed 3,655 of the state's 4,168 precincts reporting, about 87.69%, with an estimated 90.53% of votes counted; Hamilton had 545,811 votes to Marshall's 475,510, followed by David Graham with 31,194. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.
Hamilton, pastor of a large United Methodist congregation in the Kansas City area, campaigned on affordability and bipartisanship and calls himself an independent-minded Democrat; Marshall, an obstetrician before entering politics, was elected to the U.S. House in 2016 and to the Senate in 2020. President Trump carried Kansas by more than 16 percentage points in 2024, and the race was long seen as safely Republican until polls tightened in the final weeks, drawing both Trump and Vice President JD Vance to Kansas to campaign for Marshall.
