Ohio Senate Special Election: AP Calls Race for Brown, Who Returns to the Senate
The Associated Press called Ohio's special U.S. Senate election on the evening of November 3 for former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who defeated Republican incumbent Senator Jon Husted and returns to the Senate after two years away. Ohio is in the American Midwest, and its capital is Columbus. The AP called the race at 11:10 p.m. Eastern.
The AP results page showed 7,733 of the state's 8,834 precincts reporting, about 87.54%, with an estimated 87.55% of votes counted; Brown had 2,024,344 votes to Husted's 1,936,096, followed by William Redpath with 118,335 and Greg Levy with 84,693. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.
The special election decided who serves the remainder of the term originally won by Vice President JD Vance: after Vance became vice president, Governor Mike DeWine appointed then-Lieutenant Governor Husted to the seat in January 2025. Brown represented Ohio in the Senate from 2007 to 2025 before losing re-election in 2024 to Republican Bernie Moreno; he will now serve the rest of Vance's term through January 2029 and face voters again in 2028.
