Federal Election Monitors Return to Laramie County, Wyoming Polls Under 300-Foot Buffer
Voters in Laramie County, Wyoming welcomed federal election monitors back to polling places on November 3. The U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed it will send federal monitors to the county to oversee the November 3 general election; monitors had previously made a surprise visit to a polling place during the state's August primary. The difference this time is a distance rule: according to the Laramie County Clerk's Office, the monitors agreed to observe a 300-foot buffer outside polling places, roughly the length of a football field, which means voters may not necessarily see federal monitors inside polling places. The arrangement stems from the state attorney general's opinion that state law requires persons without specific authorization to be kept out of polling places. Voters interviewed on Election Day reacted in different ways: Sandra, a first-time voter, said monitors not being too close and not causing too much disruption makes the arrangement acceptable; another voter, Nicolas Mallet, said trust but verify, that having an impartial way to check is important, and that he considered the boundary to prevent interference fair. Overall, interviewed voters said the monitors' presence did not change their confidence in voting.
