Washington Approves Transfer of State Land to City of Pacific for a Park, in $840,000 Deal Benefiting Schools
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources announced on November 3 that it has entered into a direct transfer agreement with the City of Pacific to convey a parcel of state land to the city for conservation and a future park. The agreement, known as the Ellingson West Direct Transfer, involves a parcel currently zoned residential that sits on the department's 'urban transition lands' list; the Board of Natural Resources unanimously approved the transfer at its November 3 meeting. Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove said the transfer is a good opportunity for the department to work with the City of Pacific to meet the community's need for a new park and open conservation space, while generating more revenue for public schools. The parcel's market value is appraised at $840,000, and that value will be used to acquire replacement land for the department to support schools and local government operations. 'Urban transition lands' are state parcels currently managed for natural resource production that could be managed more efficiently or generate higher economic returns under a different use; the department works with local governments and market data to decide which parcels are suitable for conversion to benefit trust beneficiaries.
