California Polls Close and Counting Begins, With Governor and 14 Propositions Decided the Same Day
California voters went to the polls on November 3 to decide the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, treasurer, attorney general, insurance commissioner, superintendent of public instruction and other state offices, as well as 14 statewide propositions. Polls closed at 8 p.m. Pacific and counting began, with the Associated Press not yet calling the governor's race that night. The governor's race pitted Democrat Xavier Becerra against Republican Steve Hilton, and the superintendent's race pitted Sonia Shaw against Richard Barrera.
The most closely watched measures included Proposition 39, which would require voters to show a government-issued ID when voting in person and to write the last four digits of the chosen ID number on mail-ballot envelopes, with election officials checking the number against voter registration records before counting; the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office estimated the requirement would add tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars a year in costs for state and local governments. Under state law, counties must certify results by December 3 and the secretary of state gives final confirmation on December 11.
