Counting Update: Hyde-Smith Leads Colom for Now in Mississippi Senate Race, AP Says Too Early to Call
Polls closed at 7 p.m. on November 3 in Mississippi and counting began statewide, with voters still in line at 7 p.m. entitled by law to vote. Secretary of State Michael Watson had reminded voters to bring valid photo ID. In the Associated Press's latest tally, with about 67.6 percent of the expected vote counted, incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith had 321,128 votes to Democratic challenger Scott Colom's 305,968; Hyde-Smith led for now, but the AP still rated the race Too Early to Call and had not declared a winner. Independent candidate Ty Pinkins also received votes.
The figures are unofficial preliminary counts, and final results are subject to the official canvass reported by counties and certified by the state. The Senate race is Mississippi's most closely watched federal contest this year: Hyde-Smith is seeking re-election, and Colom is the Lowndes County district attorney.
