Tabulator Failures Slow Voting Across Michigan as DOJ Monitors Overstep in Dearborn and Flint
Michigan officials said ballot tabulators malfunctioned at multiple places statewide on Election Day, November 3, and that Justice Department monitors overstepped their authority in two incidents. The Department of State confirmed tabulator failures at Thurston High School in Redford Township and Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, and voters also reported a broken tabulator at Wilkinson Middle School in Madison Heights, confirmed by the Michigan ACLU. Angela Benander, the Department of State's chief communications officer, said at a 1 p.m. briefing that such minor equipment problems are not unusual on a general election day, that staff would ask voters to wait for repairs or place ballots in an auxiliary bin for later counting, and that no voter had been reported turned away because of tabulator problems.
Separately, Attorney General's Office spokesperson Kimberly Bush said DOJ monitors in Dearborn asked election workers for training materials and in Flint questioned workers about training; the state contacted the Justice Department, which confirmed the actions were outside the monitors' role of observing and documenting suspected violations of federal election law and said it would follow up to prevent a repeat. The Justice Department said it sent 1,000 monitors to all 50 states this year, stationing them in Michigan cities including Detroit, Dearborn, Flint, Grand Rapids and Lansing.
