Illinois EPA Launches $3.9 Million Clean Trucks Program to Help Fleets Switch to Electric Trucks
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency launched the Clean Trucks Program on November 3, putting $3.9 million toward helping commercial fleet operators replace diesel trucks with zero-emission vehicles and prepare for charging infrastructure. The program is part of the state's Drive Cleaner Illinois initiative to cut air pollution and promote cleaner transportation technology. Of the total, $3 million funds a new Clean Fleet and Freight Concierge service giving small and mid-sized fleet operators one-on-one help assessing vehicle choices, charging needs and how electric trucks fit their operations; the EPA is soliciting qualified firms to run the service in the northern and southern parts of the state, in areas served mainly by the PJM and Midcontinent Independent System Operator grids, with funding from a U.S. EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant.
Another roughly $935,000 comes from the federal Diesel Emissions Reduction Act program to help businesses buy all-electric trucks, covering up to 45 percent of eligible costs to replace Class 5 to 8 diesel trucks with new battery-electric ones. The EPA said switching should improve air quality in freight-affected communities and shield participating fleets from diesel price swings, though it has not announced how many trucks the first round is expected to replace or on what timeline.
