Equipment Arrives at Cascade Point Ferry Site Before Construction Is Authorized
The Cascade Point ferry terminal site north of Juneau, Alaska, saw new movement on November 3: the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and its contractor have begun moving equipment onto the site, but construction has not yet been authorized. The department said on November 2 that no ground-disturbing work may start until the state environmental checklist and consultations under the Alaska Historic Preservation Act are completed, and that it will issue another update on the schedule and potential impacts before work begins.
The terminal site is near Mile 42 of Glacier Highway. A $37.6 million federal Rural Ferry Program award supports the project, which is intended to shorten sailing times between Juneau, Haines and Skagway. Phase one covers landside work, including an access road, a bridge over Cascade Creek, a staging area and stockpiled material for a future marine causeway. Phase two, the berth and waterside facilities budgeted at $80.5 million, remains in federal environmental review. In March, the state postponed construction beyond 2026 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers required complete design materials for the phase-two permit application. The department stressed that staging equipment is preparation only and does not mean construction has begun.
