Follow-Up: Polish Ambassadors to China, Romania and the UN Resign in Protest over Constitutional Tribunal Crisis
Polish foreign ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór announced on the afternoon of November 2 that Poland's permanent representative to the United Nations, Krzysztof Szczerski, had submitted a request to shorten his diplomatic mission at the UN. Szczerski, who has served as ambassador since 2021, is the third Polish ambassador to resign since the crisis over the Constitutional Tribunal (TK) erupted, as the fallout spread into Poland's diplomatic service.
Two envoys had already quit: the ambassador to China, Jakub Kumoch, resigned on Friday, October 30, and asked to be recalled, and the ambassador to Romania, Paweł Soloch, resigned on Saturday, October 31. Kumoch said his decision was a "matter of conscience," as "there are certain things I cannot explain abroad without losing face, and I have no intention of speaking ill of Poland." Soloch wrote that the "attempt to unlawfully take over the Constitutional Tribunal" had left him with "no possibility of continuing to serve as ambassador." All three men previously served as aides or advisers to former President Andrzej Duda, who is aligned with the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski responded sharply. He called the way Kumoch ended his diplomatic mission unprofessional and said Kumoch no longer represented the Republic of Poland. On November 2, after Szczerski's resignation, Sikorski suggested the three had quit at the urging of current President Karol Nawrocki, who is also aligned with PiS, and remarked sardonically that, unlike the Polish ambassadors who resigned over the imposition of martial law in 1981 despite risking vengeance from the communist regime, the newly resigned trio "will surely be handsomely rewarded for their heroic deeds."
The resignations stem from the Constitutional Tribunal crisis that began on the evening of October 30, when a group of government-backed judges entered the court and declared its chief justice, Bogdan Święczkowski, suspended for failing to fulfil his duties. President Nawrocki entered the court in the early hours of the following morning and clashed with the rival camp, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk then addressed the nation, declaring there could be "no compromise" over the rule of law. The three ambassadors' resignations have carried the dispute over control of the court from the judiciary and politics into Poland's foreign service.
