ICE Arrests More Than 180 People in Five-Day Operation in Alabama
Huntsville, Ala. — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on November 2 that its New Orleans office, working with its 287(g) law enforcement partners, conducted a targeted immigration enforcement operation in northwestern Alabama during the week of Oct. 19. The five-day operation resulted in the arrests of more than 180 people and the arrests and removals of multiple criminal illegal aliens from the community, ICE said.
Many of those arrested have criminal histories that include charges such as aggravated assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, assault on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence and criminal impersonation, ICE said. Those arrested remain in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings.
"ERO New Orleans is committed to protecting our communities by identifying and apprehending illegal aliens who pose public safety concerns and enforcing our nation's immigration laws," said ERO New Orleans acting Field Office Director Scott Ladwig. "Seven out of the top 10 safest cities in the United States cooperate with ICE. Together, we remain focused on locating and removing those who threaten the safety of northwestern Alabama communities."
ICE said ERO New Orleans led the operation with support from local 287(g) law enforcement partners in Franklin, Lawrence, Colbert and Marshall counties. The 287(g) program provides state and local law enforcement agencies with another tool to enhance public safety by arresting and removing criminal illegal aliens involved in gang activity, violent crimes, sex offenses, drug trafficking and other illicit activity. ICE said information about criminal alien activity can be reported to the ICE Tip Line at (866) DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or through its online tip form.
