NYPD Posts Video of Seized Guns Being Destroyed: Thousands of Illegal Firearms Melted Down
In New York City, New York County, New York, the New York Police Department posted a roughly 90-second video on social media on November 2 showing seized firearms being destroyed, with semiautomatic handguns burning in a furnace and carts of rifles and handguns pushed into the process. "They are melted down, never to cause harm again," the department wrote of the thousands of illegal guns taken off the streets.
New York City requires licensing and registration for firearms, and the department periodically destroys seized guns. In April 2025, the then mayor and police commissioner announced the destruction of more than 3,500 firearms, with the metal donated to a technical school for welding students to turn into a memorial. The new video did not state how many guns were destroyed in this batch or when they were seized.
