Hong Kong Pianist Aristo Sham Makes His San Diego Debut Dec. 4: Cliburn Gold Medalist Plays Prokofiev
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Youthful Visions comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on Dec. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham makes his debut with the orchestra in Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2; Venezuelan conductor Diego Matheuz leads the program, which also includes Carreño's Margariteña and Sibelius' Symphony No. 2.
Born in Hong Kong in 1996, Sham won the gold medal and the audience award at the 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2025, the first Hong Kong-born pianist to take the prize. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard and a master's in piano from the New England Conservatory. Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto, vast in scale and fearsomely difficult, is a proving ground for young pianists.
The opener, Margariteña by Venezuelan composer Inocente Carreño, connects to the El Sistema lineage shared by Matheuz and Music Director Rafael Payare. Sibelius' Symphony No. 2, the Finnish composer's most popular symphony, closes the program.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels. Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians.
