Canada: $750 Million for Year-Round Fruit and Vegetable Production Under New Agriculture Program
The Government of Canada announced in Ottawa on October 30 the launch of the $750-million Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Growth Pathway Program, to help Canadian producers grow more fruit and vegetables year-round and reduce reliance on imports, as part of the $3.2-billion National Food Security Strategy.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald said Canada's short growing season limits its ability to produce enough fruit and vegetables to meet year-round demand. The program has two streams: a $650-million Technology Adoption Stream supporting automation, robotics, lighting and digital growing tools, and a $100-million stream expanding local food production in rural and northern communities.
Approved projects may receive between $100,000 and $10 million. Eligible organisations are encouraged to submit a project summary form until December 23, 2026.
MacDonald said controlled environment agriculture is transforming how food is grown in Canada, and that investing in year-round production of fresh fruit and vegetables closer to home will strengthen food security, create jobs and support economic growth in communities across the country. The National Food Security Strategy, Canada's first, was launched by Prime Minister Mark Carney on June 11, 2026, with $3.2 billion over 10 years.
