Home to Some 2,500 State Employees: California Names Its Labor and Workforce Development Agency Building for Dolores Huerta
Sacramento — California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on October 30 that the state's new Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) Building in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, will be formally named in honor of Dolores Huerta, the late labor leader, civil rights activist and member of the California Hall of Fame.
The building officially opened on January 21, 2026. It houses approximately 2,500 state employees from the Labor and Workforce Development Agency, the Employment Development Department (EDD), the Department of Industrial Relations, and the California Workforce Development Board.
In announcing the naming, Newsom said Dolores Huerta's legacy is inseparable from the story of California's labor movement: she stood shoulder to shoulder with farmworkers, helped build powerful unions, and fought to make sure working people had a voice, a seat at the table, and the dignity they deserved. Naming the building in her honor, he said, is a lasting tribute to that legacy and a reminder of the responsibility to carry forward the progress she helped win for workers across the state.
Stewart Knox, California Secretary of Labor, said Dolores Huerta lived a life of service with an unrelenting commitment to justice and the dignity of all people, and that the state owes her an immeasurable debt of gratitude for her tireless advocacy on behalf of farmworkers and working families across the nation. Every person who walks through the doors of the building, he said, will be reminded of her enduring legacy and her mission to build a more just and equitable future.
Dolores Huerta died earlier this week at age 96. Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom previously issued a statement on her passing, and California ordered flags flown at half-staff in her honor. Naming the state labor agency's headquarters building for her is a further memorial announced by the state following her death.
