Haiti: 5.94 Million People Face Severe Food Insecurity, 53 Percent of the Population
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned on October 28 that 5.94 million people in the Caribbean country of Haiti face severe acute food insecurity, 53 percent of the population.
The figure comes from the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis. The FAO said the number could rise further, with more Haitians at risk of falling deeper into hunger.
The World Food Programme projects that 6.35 million Haitians will be in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or worse between March and June 2027. The WFP says it needs $78 million to operate through March 2027, and has provided food assistance to 2.6 million people in 2026.
The FAO attributes the crisis to a combination of armed-group violence and displacement, inflation of around 17 percent, a 2.7 percent contraction in GDP in 2025 and a severe drought linked to a strong El Niño. The agency has distributed emergency agricultural kits, including seeds, poultry, ducks and goats, to more than 320,000 people. FAO officials Rein Paulsen and Pierre Vauthier warned that armed activity disrupting farming could reduce harvests further.
