New York City Mayor Mamdani Cancels $225 Million Joint Public Safety Training Center, Scrapping Former Mayor Adams' 16-Agency Plan
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has quietly canceled the joint public safety training center proposed by former Mayor Eric Adams, a project that would have concentrated the training of more than a dozen law enforcement agencies in one place at a cost of $225 million. City Hall spokesman Sam Raskin said Mamdani decided not to move forward with the proposed public safety training center and that no funding for it is included in the budget.
Raskin explained that police officers, correction officers and other law enforcement personnel have distinct duties and training needs, and that spending $225 million to consolidate their existing training facilities was neither necessary nor a good use of public funds. The decision was first reported by City & State, according to reports, but City Hall did not say when Mamdani made it.
The project dated to the Adams administration and was originally set to break ground earlier this year, aiming to break down walls between law enforcement agencies; earlier funding had been earmarked in 2021 by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, when the plan was only to build a new training facility for the Department of Correction on the NYPD academy campus. During last year's primary, Mamdani, along with nearly every other Democratic candidate, opposed the 16-agency joint training plan and compared it to Atlanta's controversial "Cop City" project. City Council Republican Minority Leader David Carr criticized the cancellation, and City Hall said the funds will no longer be used for this project.
